Really good trip up to Pyramid Lake and beyond. Parking lot was a little packed on the holiday weekend but the trails give plenty of room to spread out, didn’t come across too many people. Weather got a little dicey but overall a great place to backpack.
Is the entrance to the cirque of the towers loop. Is not steep at all, 5 miles, and you are at big Sandy Lake. Crossing couple streams, not very wide and mostly shallow. We enjoy the trail, and we camp on Sandy Lake for 4 days and day hike every day to a different lake from there and back. The most important thing is the cirque of the towers and hard trail, but it was an amazing experience. Loved.
Great hike, amazing views! Popular trail head. However, once you get going you don't pass many people. We went towards Big Sandy Lake and then Cirque of the Towers and back. Can make it a loop.
Did the loop clockwise because challenging as ascending Texas Pass may be, I wouldn't have wanted to descend that steep grade! NOTE: Do not attempt this hike in July without a mosquito net and plenty of repellent (and even then, lots of patience for the swarms of thousands of relentless mosquitoes the size of hummingbirds).
Despite being "in the middle of nowhere" the dirt road to this trailhead is in pretty good condition. In mid-July, there weren't too many bumpy spots and we were able to access the trailhead in a Chevy Volt.
